Vandiperiyar State Vegetable Farm will operate as an agricultural tourism center from Friday. Seeds and seedlings of vegetables and flowers will be on display and available for sale at the center. A farm official said the initiative would help familiarize visitors with developments in agriculture.
The serene ambience of the farmhouse by the Kollam-Theni national road is an added bonus. Those who visit Thekkady can drop by and see the many experiences in agriculture.
A project of 1.83 crore
The infrastructure for agricultural tourism was developed over a year ago at a cost of 1.83 crore. There are walkways, rest areas and toilets. Information on the history of the state vegetable farm is provided, in addition to details on the latest technological advances in agriculture. The farm, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, has a marketing counter and a cardamom and fruit processing unit. Senior agriculture official VT Sulochana said entry would initially be free for visitors. She said agricultural tourism has a lot of potential in Idukki, the state vegetable farm plans to use it to the fullest. Farmers would also benefit from the business, she added.
