Hyderabad: Congress demands that Bapu Ghat be developed as a major tourist site | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Congressional leaders, former vice president of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Marri Sashidhar Reddy, V Hanumanth Rao, G Niranjan and others held a dharna on Saturday in front of the statue of Gandhi at Bapu Ghat.
They condemned Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s failure to visit Bapu Ghat to pay homage to the Mahatma even Gandhi Jayanthi as the nation celebrates 75 years of independence.
They said it was unfortunate that the authorities ended the arrangements and closed the museum immediately after the governor left the premises, denying ordinary people the opportunity to pay homage to the father of the nation. The Raj Ghat in Delhi remains open until 5 p.m. on such occasions, they said.
Congress leaders made three demands, including that Bapu Ghat be a prominent destination on the Telangana tourist map with activities throughout the year and schedule regular visits by schoolchildren to get to know and understand Gandhiji, his contributions and ideals.
Bapu Ghat should remain open with all facilities like museum etc. until the night of October 2 Gandhi Jayanti and January 30 “Martyrs Day” every year so that people have the opportunity to pay homage.
Members of Congress withdrew their protest after the CEO of the Tourism Corporation assured them action would be taken to improve facilities, Shashidhar Reddy said.
