Jokowi and Sandiaga Uno demanded to close tourist sites during Eid holidays

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Secretary of the National Awakening Party (PKB) for Social Movements and Disasters, Luqman Hakim, asked President Joko “JokowiWidodo and Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno to reconsider the policy on tourist attractions during the Eid al-Fitr holidays. He mentioned the recent crowds of visitors to Tanah Abang market in Jakarta .

“To be more clear, I ask that all tourist attractions be completely closed during the Eid holidays, May 6-17, 2021,” Luqman said in a written statement on Monday May 3.

He was pessimistic that the government has enough officers to monitor tourist sites and ensure there are no violations of health protocols. The government could reopen tourism after Eid as long as it is able to ensure the implementation of the protocol.

“Taking preventative measures is much better than having the situation out of control and the Covid-19 tsunami later on as is happening in India,” Luqman said.

The dramatic increase in visitors to Tanah Abang Market in Jakarta has also happened in malls in other areas as people try to finish their Eid holiday shopping.

On the one hand, the PKB politician viewed this phenomenon as a stronger resilience of the popular economy, which was different from the situation last year before Eid al-Fitr with almost zero economic activity at the following the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, recent rushes to shopping malls were alarming given the potential for massive violations of health protocols. “If he’s out of control, there will be a dramatic spike in Covid-19 widespread in the country, ”said Luqman.
