Khammam: A statue of NT Rama Rao, former Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh and legendary actor, is being installed in Khammam town.
According to officials, the statue at Lake Lakaram will be added as a tourist attraction on Tank Bund, which is modeled after the one in Hyderabad.
The statue of the founder of the TDP is blocked on the initiative of the Minister of Transport of Telangana, Puvvada Ajay Kumar, originating from the district of Khammam.
He took to Twitter on Saturday to thank the state government for granting the clearance.
According to officials, work is underway to fabricate a 40-foot-tall statue of NTR into an avatar of Lord Krishna. About Rs 3 crore is spent.
Members of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA), some industrialists and businessmen have come forward to contribute.
They hired the services of a sculptor from Nizamabad and other artists for the work. Work was underway to erect a plinth on which the statue will sit.
NTR had played the role of Lord Krishna in mythological films like “Mayabazar” (1957), “Sri Krishna Tulabharam” (1966) and “Dana Veera Soora Karna” (1977).
The statue was originally scheduled to be unveiled on May 28, the 100th anniversary of NTR’s birth.
His grandson and famous actor Jr NTR had to reveal it. However, the work has been delayed.
NTR, who enjoyed demigod status among the Telugu people for various mythological roles he played, entered politics by floating the TDP on March 29, 1982 on the slogan of self-respect in Telugu. He changed the course of politics in the then undivided Andhra Pradesh.
A native of Krishna district, he enjoyed immense popularity in all parts of the undivided state. He died in 1996 at the age of 72.
Although Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh as a separate state in 2014, NTR is hailed by all sides as one of the greatest leaders.
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao was also with the TDP before he left the party and launched Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to revive the Telangana movement two decades ago.
On the centenary of NTR’s birth, several Telangana ministers and TRS leaders had paid homage to him at NTR Ghat near Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad.
They asked the Center to bestow Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor, on NTR.
