Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Saturday suggested that a statue of the national poet Subramania Bharathi, modeled on the “Statue of Unity” erected for Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Gujarat, be built by the sea in the Union territory to attract tourists and called for a comprehensive development policy for the sector on trade union territory.

Addressing participants at the one-day ‘tourism actors’ conclave, organized by the Tourism Ministry here, she said Pondicherry has rich potential to develop the sector.

“The natural resources available here as well as the promising spiritual and medical sectors also offer good prospects for developing Pondicherry into a center of spiritual and medical tourism,” she said.

The lieutenant governor also said that a city of cinema could be created in Pondicherry so that films and television series can be produced, which would ensure a flow of income to the treasury.

She said that she had also advocated for the expansion of the airport here and the operation of ferry services between Karaikal and Jaffna (Sri Lanka).

“I made this plea by participating in the conclave meeting of chief ministers of the southern zone which was held in Tirupati recently. I will follow up on this by asking the Center to extend the runway at the airport of Pondicherry, ”she said.

“Tourism is a promising and most dynamic sector in Puducherr. A large statue of Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi is expected to be erected on the seashore here on the same lines as the statue of unity erected in honor of the leader. veteran Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat, ”she said.

The 182-meter statue dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia, Gujarat, the tallest in the world, is a major tourist attraction.

People with disabilities and Tourism Minister K Lakshminarayanan, Cooperation Minister Sai Saravanan Kumar, officials from the tourism development department and lawmakers were among those who attended the stakeholder meeting.
