Vice President Nangolo Mbumba will unveil the statue of Namibian liberation struggle hero Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo at Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo airport in Ondangwa on Friday morning.
In a press release on Thursday, Namibia Airports Company spokesman Dan Kamati said the unveiling ceremony follows the renaming of Ondangwa Airport in August 2019 in honor of Ya Toivo. .
“The event will bring together around 150 guests, including Ya Toivo’s widow Vicki Ya Toivo and family members of the former Robben Island Prisoners’ Trust of Namibia and other leaders,” Kamati said.
Kamati, however, urged the public to follow the ceremony on NBC TV and his Facebook page from 9:00 a.m. to avoid overcrowding at the airport, amid the heat wave which the Namibian Meteorological Service says will persist for the next few months. next few days in northern Namibia.
“The airport has a new terminal inaugurated in 2015 by President Hage Geingob,” he said.
Among many other historic achievements, Ya Toivo was a founding member of the South-West African People’s Organization (Swapo) and its predecessor, the Ovamboland People’s Organisatio.
After his release from Robben Island in 1984, Ya Toivo pledged to build a democratic Namibia, serving as Swapo’s general secretary and in various government ministerial portfolios.
Ya Toivo retired from active politics in 2006 and died in 2017.
