vendruthy: Kochi: the old Venduruthy bridge will be transformed into a tourist site | Kochi News

KOCHI: The authorities plan to transform the old Venduruthy bridge into a recreational tourist destination. The old bridge stood idle after a new parallel bridge was built a few years ago.
PA Public Works Minister Mohammed Riyas, who also holds the tourism portfolio, has asked district collector Jafar Malik to explore the possibilities of turning the old bridge into a leisure facility coupled with a commercial area. Now the authorities plan to provide parking lots for two-wheelers, an open market where street food is available and recreational facilities for tourists on the bridge.
The district authorities solicited suggestions from the general public to improve the design and check the viability of the project. Hours after the District Collector posted a message on his Facebook page asking for suggestions from the public, many offered suggestions.
In 2018, TOI published a series of stories highlighting the need for a leisure and shopping area on the bridge.
Then Aswas Public Amenities Ltd, an independent agency under PWD, had prepared a plan to set up a pedestrian facility on the bridge. A 700 m walk, eight or nine spice kiosks and other items of tourist interest, a few restaurants, a small park and games for children, a toilet block, resting place for the public, a corner dedicated to fishing, etc., were part of the proposal. But nothing materialized as the government did not show much interest in implementing the project. Now that the minister himself is showing interest in the project, many are hoping the project will take off.
